He is a muscular and extremely tall man and appears to be much older than he actually is. Sado has a tattoo on his left shoulder which reads Amore e Morte (. He also wears a dark, long- sleeved shirt with a rose emblazoned on the left sleeve. Seventeen months after Aizen's defeat, Sado has grown a small goatee on his chin. Nonetheless, he is treated equally within his group of friends in Karakura. Sado also has a soft spot for cute things, like small animals and Kon's plushie form. He is quite loyal to his friends, especially Ichigo, who is one of his closest friends, even going as far as to try and defeat a Gotei 1. He is also fearless and told so by numerous enemies such as the first Hollow he fights. He displays little emotion except when something he cares about is in danger. Chad was later attacked by two of Yokochini's gang members and, keeping with his vow, did not strike back or defend himself. However, as the gang members fled they left a cell phone with an ongoing call to Yokochini, allowing him to spy on Chad and learn what might get a rise out of him. Yokochini later had Chad abducted and threatened him with the destruction of the coin. Ichigo stuck his neck out again, this time to protect not only Chad, but also the coin he held so dear. When the gang was defeated, Chad and Ichigo made a pact to fight for each other and protect one another. Their reputation far exceeded that of violent youths as they were made up to be juvenile gangsters of sorts. On their first day of high school, Chad and Ichigo were forced into pushing back a gang of thugs led by Reiichi . When Mizuiro Kojima befriended them, Reiichi started bullying Keigo Asano, forcing the two to help him and beat up Reiichi. Just as he takes it, a girder falls on the group and it falls on top of Sado's back. The bird suddenly begins talking as if it understands the situation, so Sado begins conversing with it. Sado's friends notice his injuries and Sado explains what happened to him. Sado then shows the group his new cockatiel, but he doesn't explain where he got it from. However, Sado claims that he's fine and tries to leave, but he ends up collapsing on the ground before getting anywhere, and he begins resting in bed. As soon as he comes outside, Sado notices Rukia Kuchiki and Ichigo and he begins running from them. He immediately punches the invisible threat, named Shrieker, surprising Rukia. Rukia then warns Sado that Shrieker is flying, but Sado doesn't see it as a problem as he picks up a telephone pole and uses it to slam Shrieker into the ground. Sado then helps out Rukia just as Shrieker flies into the air again. However, Sado launches Rukia into the air, but she's stopped by Shrieker's miniature bombs. Shrieker then brings out Sado's cockatiel and threatens to kill the bird if Sado moves, so Rukia is forced to fight alone. Sado simply claims that the bird was like this when he woke up. As the battle goes on Sado recalls that his fists are meant for protecting, and this causes armor to form around his right arm and allows him to gain the advantage. Sado then collapses onto the ground and wonders why he gained this power, but decides it doesn't matter and is simply glad Ichigo's sister didn't get hurt. Urahara then tells them that Ichigo's large amount of Reiatsu leaked onto them and that caused them to gain their powers, and that these powers are what they naturally had to begin with. This causes the two of them to wonder what choice they should make. While successfully entering, the group becomes separated from each other. Sado is then confronted by Shunsui Ky. This causes Shunsui to draw his dual Zanpakut. Sado is attacked by the enemy and captured. Sado returns to his everyday life and goes back to school. After school, he talks with Orihime about their time in Soul Society and that they'll have to get stronger in order to be useful to Ichigo. Later, Sado and the others find Orihime at her house being kidnapped. After completing these tests, the group finds Orihime back at her house. However, it ends up being a trap and Sado is captured by the enemy. Yoruichi suddenly appears and informs the group of a new threat called the Bount. After putting the Mod- Soul in a stuffed animal, Sado searches for a Bount with Orihime, Kur. They end up finding a killed Human and a Bount named Ry. Later during school, the Mod- Souls sense a Bount in the area and they head towards the trace of it. Sado and the others find Ry. The group later hears that Ury. The group is able to fight them off for a bit and they are able to escape outside. After figuring out the Bount live at a mansion they head over to said mansion. Sado and the others have difficulty against Sawatari's Doll and they soon create an opportunity to escape. As they wonder what to do, Sawatari reappears and has his Doll attack Sado, but Sado is pushed out of the way by Ururu, who ends up taking his blow and is eaten. The group escapes again and they come up with a plan to save Ururu. However, the plan is unsuccessful. However, Sawatari still survives and he escapes with his doll, leaving the battle undecided. After battling it and being saved by Rangiku, Ichigo tells Sado to protect Orihime as she heals Rukia and Rangiku. However, the Bount end up leaving to Soul Society with the help of Ury. After talking with her, Sado splits up with everyone to look for the Bount again. Sado and the others ride on his boars to head to Kusajishi due to rumors of the Bount being there. However, the arrival Kenpachi allows Sado and the others to head onto Seireitei. The two find Kariya and fight him, but Sado is quickly pushed aside by Kariya. Sado then watches on as Kariya combines with the J. After the battle concludes and Kariya is defeated, Sado and the others run up to Ichigo and congratulate him. Sado tells Orihime to run away with Tatsuki, but Yammy attacks Sado and knocks him out. However Orihime tells Sado that she's fine with not fighting and leaves. Sado and the others get outside and they appear in a vast desert- like area. They then notice Las Noches in the distance, and believing Orihime is there, they begin heading towards it. Before the Hollow can kill them though Rukia and Renji appear and kill the Hollow. Sado then quickly overwhelms his opponent, forcing Gantenbainne into activating his Resurrecci. Gantenbainne sends a powerful attack towards his opponent, but Sado is uninjured and Sado tells Gantenbainne that his right arms power is for defending, while his left arms power is for attacking, and his left arm takes on a new form that he calls Brazo Izquierda del Diablo. However, he is immediately confronted by the Espada Nnoitra Gilga and is attacked. Ichigo thanks Sado and the others for their help. As Ichigo fights several Hollows Sado appears alongside Ury. Sado easily fends him off though with his armored arm. Sado is initially overpowered by Genga's Bakk. However, Genga fuses with the walls formed from his Bakk. After battling a bit more, Sado brings out the true power of his left arm and uses La Muerte to kill Genga, but Sado falls down unconscious in the process. Though Sado constantly annoys Renji with his quiet nature, in the end, the two finally learn how to work together and kill Battikaroa by Sado using his La Muerte to distract the Hollow and Renji finishing him off for good with his Bankai. However, Yammy goes into his Resurrecci. Sado's left arm and head are bandaged as the group greets Ichigo. When Ichigo suddenly collapses, Sado, Ury. Rukia explains he's been unconscious for a month and details the loss of his Shinigami powers. Sado along with the rest of the group is present to see Ichigo's farewell to Rukia as she fades from Ichigo's sight once his spiritual energy disappears. Muramasa subsequently invades Sado's mind and manages to subdue him. Sado later recovers to fight off Muramasa's Hollows in order for Rukia to go after Muramasa. When Muramasa's power rises again by drawing in more Hollows, Sado joins Ury. While Sado and his friends are unsure what to do, several Shinigami arrive to help. After the Shinigami destroy the Hollows and Muramasa's dome collapses, Ichigo emerges with a defeated and dying Muramasa, who apologizes for his mistakes before fading away. Sado watches Ichigo jump overhead. As Sado is out with Ury. Orihime asks if they need help, but they decline her offer. Inaba activates his Shikai and strikes Sado before he can react, badly wounding him. Inaba goes to finish him, but Orihime blocks the attack. As Ichigo then goes to a meeting with the members of the Gotei 1. Sado helps Orihime set up a barbecue for Nozomi. After Nozomi is saved from the Reigai- Rangiku Matsumoto, he joins in at the barbecue. They are confronted by Reigai- Renji whom Sado begins to battle as Orihime goes to heal their comrades. In his battle, Sado struggles and is soon aided by the real Renji. Working together, they manage to defeat the Reigai. As Nozomi then blames herself, Kon says it will take more than that to kill Ichigo and Sado adds that it was Ichigo's idea to go so she cannot blame herself. After Urahara successfully picks up on a reading, he tells Sado and the others to accompany him. Top 3. 0 Anime Series of All Time . Flippant and heartbreaking, cynical and triumphant, personal and universal, each of these OVAs tells a story of humanity’s struggle against all the forces of the universe with style and heart. And each can stand alone, as well – Gunbuster is helmed by a pre- Eva Anno already exhibiting his unnerving style of direction, and Diebuster offers a very appropriate conclusion to the FLCL era of Gainax production. Only six episodes each, too – it’s pretty remarkable how much story each of these manage to tell. Here are my essays on Gunbuster and Diebuster. Both Gunbuster and Diebuster are available at Amazon. Shinsekai Yori. Shinsekai Yori is basically tailor- made for fans of fantasy and scifi novels. Heavy on worldbuilding and questions of human nature, its story unfolds on a scale far greater than most anime, exploring a compelling dystopian society by following one generation from childhood through adolescence and well into adulthood. Though I often feel its characters fade into the background of its storytelling pretensions, it all works in service of an incredibly compelling central narrative, and its devastating conclusion justifies everything that came before. It’s a rare and valuable thing – few shows work on the scale of Shinsekai Yori. Here’s my review of Shinsekai Yori. I could actually go on for a while about what makes various idol shows great (and I have), but as far as Idolm@ster specifically goes, this show is just a solid episodic drama that succeeds in almost everything it attempts. It’s got a rich and well- developed cast of characters, lots of great little character stories, and a bunch of fun adventures like “the team runs a Sunday game show” or “one idol ends up as a runaway bride while another fights yakuza goons.” On top of that, Idolm@ster features one of the best creative teams in recent memory – a bunch of former Gainax staff and other great creators combine to make this one of the most beautifully directed and animated shows I’ve seen. Even if you don’t have any interest in idols, Idolm@ster’s combination of fun stories and gorgeous execution makes it a rare and impressive show. Here’s my review of The Idolm@ster. The Idolm@ster is sadly not available in the west. Hyouka. Unless Kyo. Ani performs some tremendous about- face in priorities, it seems like Hyouka will stand as their masterpiece for a long time to come. Not that that’s a mark against it – Hyouka is a fantastic show, and easily makes best use of Kyo. Ani’s mastery of small character moments and subtle, human animation. It’s a mark to how impressive I find this show’s character work that I enjoyed it in spite of not really caring about any of the mysteries – of course, the fact that the show’s ridiculously gorgeous and filled with lush animation doesn’t hurt, either. If you’re in the mood for a more meditative character story, Hyouka’s as good as it gets. ![]() Happy Birthday Karen Strassman! My top 10 favourite roles of hers are: 1.) There are too few anime out there that really handle the trials of adulthood, and too few shows that manage to portray constant. Hyouka has sadly never received a western release. Toradora! Considering I haven’t seen Toradora since it actually aired, its position on this list may be something of an open question. But if memory serves, Toradora certainly deserves it – it’s basically the high school romcom/drama all other such shows wish they were, populated by multifaceted characters, driven by relatable, human drama, and crescendoing in a long line of iconic moments. Its conflicts emerge naturally from the base nature of its well- drawn protagonists, and perhaps most importantly, its writing actually understands the fundamentals of banter and chemistry. Anime could use a lot more shows like Toradora. Toradora is available at Amazon. Shiki. Anime doesn’t really have the best track record with horror – there’s just something inherently difficult about portraying visceral dread in animation, and few shows manage to pull it off. Fortunately, Shiki neatly avoids falling into any “this isn’t scary” traps by being more about creating an oppressive atmosphere, and focusing less on visceral horror than on the horror of human nature. Its slow- burning story depicts the breakdown of an entire community from basically every possible position within that community, making for a remarkably well- realized cast of dozens of characters. And its runtime is peppered with stark moral questions, thrilling twists, and moments of pure adrenal shock. Its themes of community and the meaning of a monster are classic ones, but Shiki infuses them with vitality and modern relevance, along with a sense of campy fun that almost tricks you into embarking on one of the darkest rides the medium has to offer. Shiki is a vivid, tense, and deeply angry show. Here’s my essay on Shiki. Shiki is available at Amazon. Kyousogiga. There’s a whole lot to love in Kyousogiga. It’s a family story, populated by a diverse set of characters and full of personal reflections on sibling and parental relations. It’s a world unto itself, a beautiful fairy tale city filled with evocative details. It’s an exercise in aesthetics, with top- notch direction, visual design, and music. And it is all of these things at once – its central conflict of a family that has fallen apart and must come back together makes brilliant use of all its aesthetic strengths, and the world they inhabit fills every frame with personality and color. It also has the best brother- sister relationship I’ve seen in any show, and as the brother of two sisters, I can really appreciate how well this show understands people. Here’s my review of Kyousogiga. Kyousogiga has been licensed but is not yet available in the west. Cowboy Bebop. Shinichiro Watanabe’s first and arguably best original production, Cowboy Bebop has a venerable and well- deserved reputation as a classic. Its stylistic mix of noir, western, scifi, and jazz feels so natural that it’s hard to believe it was basically invented by this show. Its direction is fluid and assured, its stories are incredibly varied and regularly poignant, and its characters are as iconic as they are relatable. It’s cool and funny and confident, diverse enough to have an episode for everyone, and ambitious enough to aptly demonstrate anime’s strengths as a medium. It’s as remarkable today as it was fifteen years ago. Cowboy Bebop is available at Amazon. Ping Pong The Animation. If you’ve gotten this far in my list, you probably won’t find it surprising to learn that Ping Pong is not exactly a sports show. It contains sports – and has a variety of thrilling and aesthetically stunning matches, in fact – but in truth it is a story about people, and about what brings them to ping pong and to each other. Its characters bounce off each other and grow continuously, their sharp edges and loves and ambitions all reflecting in how they change those they compete with. Its scale stretches beyond the court, with ping pong serving as either gateway to or guardian from engagement with the real world. And all of its poignant turns are framed by Masaaki Yuasa’s tremendous direction, full of beautiful interpretive flourishes and scored by a careful soundtrack that constantly elevates the proceedings. Ping Pong demonstrates that any conflict can be made gigantic through empathy for the characters involved, and goes above and beyond with its tremendous aesthetic merits. Even if you don’t consider yourself a sports show fan, Ping Pong is something special. Here’s my essay on Ping Pong. Ping Pong is available on Amazon. Kino’s Journey. Kino’s Journey is, unsurprisingly, about the journey. Not just the overt journey, though it is a travel show – every episode, Kino and her bike Hermes visit a new nation, staying just three days before moving on. Through Kino’s adventures in these strange, mystical lands, Kino’s Journey eventually reveals itself to be about the journey towards greater understanding – of how people work, of why we do the things we do, of what purpose we can possibly seek in this world. And it doesn’t offer easy answers – Kino’s Journey is rife with ambiguity, its various fables and conflicts only muddying the waters of human nature further and further. But that is, like I said, not what it’s about – there are no easy answers, but as this thoughtful, pretty, and inventive show continuously demonstrates, the journey is its own reward. Kino’s Journey is available at Amazon. Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica . However, their claymore is a hydrator and their hair dryer flips breakers, and the only invention that’s even remotely interesting is their Phone Microwave, which transforms bananas into oozing green gel. But when an experiment goes awry the gang discovers that the Phone Microwave can also send text messages to the past. And what's more, the words they send can affect the flow of time and have unforeseen, far- reaching consequences.. Tags. Time Travel. Thriller. Psychological. LGBT Themes. Conspiracy. Martin Scorsese - IMDb. Documentary) (assistant director). Himself - Nominee: Best Picture & Best Director. TV Short documentary). Himself - Director. TV Movie documentary). TV Series documentary). Ten Essential Alien Invasion Movies. Extraterrestrials seek to conquer our planet and claim it as their own. Whatever their justification for invasion, the aliens regard humanity as an obstruction to be smashed, or as a pest to be squashed. This is a generic silver screen scenario. Overwhelmingly, Hollywood’s aliens have been malevolent creatures – sometimes monstrous, sometimes invisible and parasitic, but almost always invasive. To mark the release of The 5th Wave on January 2. Howard Hawks’ The Thing from Another World saw a US Air Force crew and a journalist dispatched to a scientific outpost at the North Pole to investigate the wreckage of a crashed flying saucer. During their investigation, the Americans discover an alien body frozen in the ice, which is then hauled back to their base. Inevitably, the extraterrestrial Popsicle soon thaws- out and begins terrorizing its human captors. The parallels between The Thing from Another World and the Roswell incident have not gone unnoticed in the UFO community, or in Hollywood. Filmmaker Paul Davids, who wrote and produced the popular TV movie Roswell (1. Kyle Mac. Lachlan and Martin Sheen, notes: The Thing was the story of a flying saucer crash. The military covered it up. A newsman pleaded for disclosure. There was buried saucer wreckage. There was an alien body (that turned out to be still alive). There was secrecy. And, in the movie, there was danger. Davids wonders if the purpose of The Thing may have been to take a factual and highly sensitive event and to couch it in fiction, the goal being to ridicule the idea of saucer crashes by associating them with superficially outlandish sci- fi cinema, and/or to subtly drip- feed these realities into the popular consciousness. Hawks’ movie was based on a science- fiction story called Who Goes There? Campbell Jr., “But there are thousands of science- fiction stories,” says Davids, “and only a small fraction of them are produced as films. Was it a coincidence that a great producer put this tale to film just three years after . Such influence could, for example, have been exerted through Howard Hughes, the billionaire industrialist and defense contractor who, at the time of The Thing’s production, owned the movie’s distributor, RKO, and had an intimate working relationship with the US Department of Defense. Indulging the conspiratorial reading of The Thing, perhaps in return for business favors down the line, Hollywood/defense mogul Howard Hughes allowed his lofty contacts at the Pentagon to tweak his movie’s script in accordance with their own UFO- related goals (“I’ll scratch your back, if you scratch mine.”) In any case, and for whatever reason, the parallels between Roswell and The Thing are plain to see. Invaders from Mars (1. A fascinating addition to the burgeoning UFO subgenre, Invaders from Mars opens with young David Mac. Lean (Jimmy Hunt) witnessing a classic flying saucer from his bedroom window – the vanguard of a looming Martian invasion force. Soon the Pentagon is involved and the Army uncovers an alien plot to use mind- controlled human slaves to sabotage an atomic rocket project at a nearby government research plant. Invasion through infiltration. The Martian leader is a diminutive being with a distinctly oversized cranium and powers of telepathy and mind- control – classic characteristics of alien Grays as described by experiencers. Even the Grays’ hypnotic black eyes are present in the movie’s alien drone soldiers, who wear tight- fitting one- piece suits (also a typical detail in abduction reports). Alien implants serve as a major plot device. Following his sighting of a flying saucer the night before, our child protagonist, David, notices a red puncture mark at the base of his father’s skull. We later learn that the big- eyed drone soldiers have been implanting townsfolk with these devices in order to control them from afar in much the same manner as modern experiencers report. After the Martians are finally defeated with the help of the US military, the movie ends bizarrely with David suddenly back in his bed, as in the opening sequence. He then runs into his parents’ bedroom, confused and frightened. They reassure him he was merely suffering night terrors. David looks through his window once again and witnesses the very same flying saucer of his dream, descending slowly, exactly as it had in his sleep- state. The film ends here. Is the child still unconscious, trapped in a recurring nightmare, or was his bad dream a premonition of this now real event? This . Film critics have since interpreted Invasion of the Body Snatchers, as well as many other sci- fi movies of the Cold War era, as political allegory. Discussing the idea of allegory in alien invasion movies of the 1. Peter Biskind notes that “critics of popular culture have always been quick to point out that the Other is always other than itself, which is to say, the pods and blobs are “symbols” standing for something else.” Because the Other in films of this period frequently was linked to radiation (as in Them! But Biskind argues that critics often give Cold War sci- fi movies too much credit and that many of them were not political allegories at all, but literal reflections of cultural preoccupations. For the preferred reading of many of these films, says Biskind, “all we have to do is look at what’s before our very eyes.” When asked how to account for the tremendous appeal in the 1. UFO movie), actor Billy Gray (who played the character of Bobby Benson in the original The Day the Earth Stood Still) was unequivocal: “It correlated with reports of UFOs. At the time it was just rampant – every other person had seen something mysterious in the sky. I think that’s what made science fiction popular at this time.”Invasion of the Body Snatchers would be memorably remade in 1. Philip Kaufman with Donald Sutherland in the lead role, before being lamentably . The movie is gleefully outlandish, especially when a dead alien’s hand detaches itself, grows an eye, and runs amok. But, as with other invasion movies of the 1. UFO encounter reports is evident. The movie drew considerable inspiration from the famous Hopkinsville Kentucky case of 1. In Invasion of the Saucer Men the aliens are aggressive little creatures with green skin who get their kicks by violently harassing the residents of a rural American town. In one scene, the heroine of the piece (played by Gloria Castillo) even refers to one of the aliens as “a little green man,” just as the press had (erroneously) used the “little green men” term when reporting on the Hopkinsville case. The movie is also notable for dialogue alluding to real- world government secrecy surrounding the UFO phenomenon. When the eponymous saucer men begin their small- town siege, military personnel show up to investigate, remarking at the sight of a grounded saucer, “Amazing! One of them actually landed intact!” The implication is that saucer wrecks have been recovered by authorities in the past. Observing the saucer, one of the military men states, “Only us and the President will know,” which suggests that his unit is tasked specifically to UFO- related matters. There is even an allusion to compartmentalization of classified information in dialogue referring to “other secret units covering- up other secret things.”The Andromeda Strain (1. Adapted from Michael Crichton’s novel, The Andromeda Strain relied upon methodical procedure and clinical detail as opposed to more traditional, action- based thrills to engage audiences, and its portrayal of an uncontrollable extraterrestrial virus was inspired by serious scientific debate of the time. It had been two years since Neil Armstrong had taken his giant leap for mankind, and the Apollo program was now well under way. Within this new astronomical context, genuine public fears existed concerning the possibility of an ET virus accidentally finding its way to earth via a lunar module. In 1. 96. 7, four years prior to the release of The Andromeda Strain, the United States, Britain, and Russia had signed an agreement covering “outer- space activities,” which took into consideration concerns regarding “harmful contamination” and “adverse changes” to “the environment of the Earth resulting from the introduction of extraterrestrial matter.” The Andromeda Strain tapped these concerns to great effect, and the film proved top draw for terrified audiences everywhere. The Thing (1. 98. The 1. 98. 0s saw an influx of heart- warming UFO movies in which aliens arrived as saviors. This new genre trend prompted cinema theorist Vivian Sobchack to observe that aliens had become “our friends, playmates, brothers, and lovers.” This was true enough, although . None were more terrifying than the shapeshifting (or, rather, shape- hijacking) alien of John Carpenter’s The Thing (1. Howard Hawks’ The Thing from Another World. Despite being perhaps the best movie of Carpenter’s career, it tanked at the box- office. Released hot on the heels of the warm and fuzzy E. T., audiences were repelled by the horrific imagery of Carpenter’s ice cold creation, and its failure was regarded within the industry as a death knell for the . In Hollywood, hostile aliens took a back seat to the benevolent variety for the remainder of the decade. They Live (1. 98. Though not directly inspired by any particular UFOlogical event, John Carpenter’s They Live captured lightning in a bottle for the increasingly paranoid UFO- conspiracy community as it tapped into, and arguably helped shape, prevailing ideas about extraterrestrials colluding with human elites. Based on Ray Nelson’s 1. |
